Năm 12 tuổi, vào một buổi xế chiều có một người khách là chủ 1 tiệm giặt ủi và nhuộm áo quần đến chiếu cố, 3 đứa trẻ chạy lại chào hàng.
Ông chủ tiệm nhin vào 3 cặp mắt van xin khẩn khoản đó, không biết quyết định chọn đứa nào. Cuối cùng ông ta nói: “Đứa nào cần tiền nhất, thì tôi cho nó đánh giầy và sẽ trả công 2 đồng.”
Công đánh 1 đôi giầy chỉ có 20 xu, 2 đồng đúng là 1 món tiền rất lớn. 3 cặp mắt đều sáng lên.
Một đứa nhỏ nói: “Từ sáng đến giờ cháu chưa được ăn gì cả, nếu không kiếm được tiền hôm nay, cháu sẽ chết đói!”
Đứa khác nói: “Nhà cháu đã hết thức ăn từ 3 ngày nay, mẹ cháu lại đang bệnh, cháu phải mua thức ăn cho cả nhà tối nay, nếu không thì lại bị ăn đòn…”
Cậu Lula nhìn vào 2 đồng bạc trong tay ông chủ tiệm, nghĩ ngợi 1 lúc, rồi nói: “Nếu cháu được ông cho kiếm 2 đồng này, thì cháu sẽ chia cho 2 đứa đó mỗi đứa 1 đồng!”
Câu nói của Lula làm ông chủ tiệm và 2 đứa nhỏ kia rất ngạc nhiên.
Cậu giải thích thêm: “Tụi nó là bạn thân nhất của cháu, đã nhịn đói hết 1 ngày rồi, còn cháu thì hồi trưa còn ăn được ít đậu phụng, nên có sức đánh giầy hơn chúng nó, Ông cứ để cháu đánh đi, chắc chắn ông sẽ hài lòng”.
Cảm động trước câu nói của thằng nhỏ, ông chủ tiệm đã trả cho Lula 2 đồng bạc sau khi được cậu bé đánh óng đôi giầy. Và thằng nhỏ Lula giữ đúng lời, đã đưa ngay cho 2 đứa bạn mỗi đứa 1 đồng.
Vài ngày sau, ông chủ tiệm đã tìm đến thằng nhỏ Lula, nhận chú bé cứ sau buổi tan học là đến học nghề ở tiệm giặt nhuộm của ông ta và bao cả bữa cơm tối. Tiền lương lúc học nghề tuy là rất thấp nhưng so với đánh giầy thì khá hơn rất nhiều.
Thằng bé hiểu rằng “Chính vì mình đã đưa tay giúp đỡ những người khốn đốn, nên mới đem đến cho mình cơ hội làm thay đổi cuộc đời.”
Từ đó, miễn là có khả năng, chú bé Lula không ngần ngại giúp đỡ những người sống khốn khổ hơn mình. Sau, Lula nghỉ học đi làm thợ trong 1 nhà máy. Để bênh vực cho quyền lợi của những người thợ, cậu ta tham gia vào công đoàn.
Năm 45 tuổi, Lula lập ra đảng Lao-Công. Năm 2002, trong cuộc ứngcử tổng thống, khẩu hiệu của Lula là: “Ba bữa cơm no cho tất cả những người trong quốc gia này”. Và đắc cử làm Tổng Thống xứ Brazil. Năm 2006 đắc cử nhiệm kỳ 2, cho 4 năm tới.
